Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)
The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) was the successor the best selling NES. The SNES was introduced in North America in August of 1991 at the retail price of $199.99. At the time the SNES package included two controllers and the pack-in game Super Mario World which ultimately proved to be the best selling game for the SNES. Over it's life span it sold over 49 million units and is the best selling console of the 16 bit era. The system not only continued the popularity of Mario but brought new life to an old gaming icon with the release of the Donkey Kong Country titles. The first in the Donkey Kong Country series became the second best selling game for the SNES system. The popularity of the SNES continued even into the 32-bit era and its final days of production were in 1999.
